Don’t Run With The Rats (The Friday Ficks S5 E38)

“I need names, and I need them now,” he thundered.

Crickets.

“If you don’t give me names, I’ll have you kicked off the baseball team,” he warned.

Crickets.

“You won’t walk across the stage at graduation if you don’t start talking,” threatened the vice-principal.

Crickets.

“Do you have anything to say for yourself?”

“I wasn’t there,” I said.

And so it went in the spring of 1981, my senior year of high school, after a cafeteria food fight straight out of, and inspired by, the wildly popular movie “Animal House.”

The administrator wanted me to rat on my friends. He rolled out the full playbook: flattery, persuasion, cajoling and finally, threats.

None of it worked. Why? Because having not been present, I had no firsthand knowledge. And more importantly, because loyalty and integrity ran deeper than fear. To speculate would have been dishonest. To name names would have been disloyal. My father had taught me better.

My hands were steady. My eyes were clear. I stood firm. No names were given.

I still played baseball. I still graduated.

Pressure will test you. Temptation will whisper. Fear will knock. But when your character is rooted in values - loyalty, truth, integrity - no force can shake it.

So the next time you’re pressed to compromise what you know is right, remember: character is non-negotiable.

After all, it’s better to walk with integrity than run with the rats.

Own the day. Own the weekend.
