Find Out What It’s Worth (The Friday Ficks S6 E35)
A piece of street art in Manhattan shouted “TO DREAM IS FREE BUT THE HUSTLE IS SOLD SEPARATELY.”
The prompt made me smile, and then it made me think. Because it is both cynical and profoundly true.
Dreaming does, indeed, cost nothing. Its breadth and scope are limitless. But eventually, most dreams send you the bill.
The marathon requires miles. The book requires time. The business needs capital. The career change requires sacrifice. The trip requires money. The relationship requires uncomfortable conversations.
And that is where many dreams die. Not because the dream isn't worth pursuing, but because the price of pursuing it suddenly feels too high.
Here’s the question that keeps surfacing: Is the cost of pursuing the dream greater than the cost of never knowing what might have happened if you had?
I'm not suggesting financial recklessness. Some dreams aren't affordable, at least not yet. Others may require a different route, a longer runway, or a smaller first step.
But don't confuse “I can't afford it right now” with “I can't afford to pursue it.”
Those are very different sentiments.
Fleetwood Mac reminds us that “thunder only happens when it's raining.”
Maybe that's the point. The pursuit of something meaningful isn't always supposed to be easy. Sometimes the obstacles, sacrifices and uncertainty are simply part of the price.
So dream boldly. Make a plan. Start where you are. Count the cost. Pay the price in installments if you have to.
Because while dreams may be free, regret can be very expensive.
That dream you’ve been postponing because the cost of the hustle unnerves you?
Maybe it's time to find out what it's worth.
Own the Day. Own the weekend.
