Measured In Words (The Friday Ficks S6 E7)
“There’s no sadness here.” Four words.
Spoken by Jay Fishman, former Chairman and CEO of Travelers Insurance, after he was diagnosed with ALS - a brutal, incurable disease that attacks the body but not the will. I was in the meeting when he said it. No theatrics. No self-pity. Just resolve.
Those four words launched a multi-million dollar campaign to fight ALS. More than that, they reframed adversity for all in the room. I have carried them with me ever since.
Influence isn’t measured in followers - it’s measured in words.
Jay Fishman was an influencer.
“You disappoint me.” Three words.
My father spoke them when I came home after my sophomore year of college with a GPA that didn’t reflect my potential. He never had the opportunity to attend college himself. There was no anger in his voice - just conviction.
Those three words didn’t crush me. They clarified me. They became the catalyst that ultimately led me to law school.
My dad was an influencer.
“Thank you.” Two words.
A cancer patient spoke them to me on the side of the road before I began a 100-mile charity ride for Smilow Cancer Center. We took a quick selfie. She and her caregiver wished me well.
Whenever fatigue set in over the next six hours, I heard her voice. Two simple words carried me farther than my training ever could.
She was an influencer.
Influence isn’t about followers. It’s about impact. It’s not built on algorithms. It’s built on courage, honesty, and gratitude.
At a time when influence can be purchased, filtered, and staged, let’s remember this: real influence is measured in the lives we steady, sharpen, or strengthen - often with just a few well-chosen words.
Lead with intention. Speak with purpose.
Own the day. Own the weekend.
