Step Back Before You Sink (The Friday Ficks S6 E14)

The warning signs couldn’t have been clearer: DANGER QUICKSAND

Before we even teed off, the starter told us - if a ball lands there, “leave it” because “you won’t get out.”

A few holes later, we saw those signs lining both sides of the fairway. Stark. Unmistakable.

And I couldn’t stop thinking about how different it is in life.

Because in life, quicksand doesn’t come with signs.

It disguises itself as opportunity. As something manageable. As something you tell yourself you should be able to handle if you just try a little harder or give it a little more time.

But the more you fight it, the deeper you sink.

Quicksand shows up as overcommitment. As saying yes when you should say no. As holding on to something - an obligation, a habit, a plan, a pattern, a relationship - long after it has stopped serving you, simply because you’ve already invested so much.

It’s the conversation you avoid. The decision you delay. The weight you keep carrying out of habit, guilt, or pride long after you should have set it down.

And here’s something to be curious about: strength isn’t always pushing through. Sometimes, it’s found in stepping back.

It’s recognizing what’s not yours to fix. What’s not worth the cost or the struggle. What’s quietly pulling you under. And having the clarity and courage to “leave the ball” so the rest of your round can still be played well.

Look more closely for the warning signs.

Where do you need to step back - before you sink?

Own the day. Own the weekend.
