The Ties That Bind (The Friday Ficks S5 E43)

Technology can sometimes vex, harass, and annoy us - but every now and then, it reminds us of its higher purpose: connection.

Forty years ago, I graduated from Providence College. The education was great, but the friendships were greater. I count myself profoundly blessed to still share life with such a remarkable group of friends.

These bonds have endured through marriages, moves, milestones, and losses, with technology certainly doing its part to help keep us connected.

Earlier this week, in a large group text, one of the guys shared that our friend Bob had just lost his long-time partner Lori. He attached a moving video tribute along with his own heartfelt message:

“Hi everyone, not sure if all of you have seen this, but I think it’s awesome and worth sharing. I think we all appreciate how precious life is and that we never know how long we will have on this earth to spend with all of the people we love and hold dear to us. I pray that we all take advantage of this time that we have and enjoy life to the fullest. This group is filled with the best friends anyone could possibly hope for and we are all here for you, Bob. God Bless Everyone.”

Well said.

Moments like this remind us that connection isn’t measured in likes, shares, or emojis. It’s measured in presence, empathy, forgiveness, and love that stands the test of time.

Reach out to someone today. Tell them they matter. Celebrate the ties that bind and the friendships that have shaped your story - and hold them close.
