A Quiet Gift, Loudly Felt (The Friday Ficks S5 E50)
"If you don't have a friend in the world, you'll find one at The Bowery."
That line hung inside The Bowery in Myrtle Beach when I wandered in during my 1984 Spring Break. First opened during WWII, the bar has never closed its doors, and the legendary group Alabama was once its house band. Back then, it felt like nothing more than a funny sign in a loud, boisterous, unforgettable place.
Upon reflection, I see it differently.
Not having a friend in the world isn’t funny. It’s painful. It’s real. And it’s far more common than we like to admit.
The U.S. Surgeon General labeled loneliness a public health epidemic in 2023. Studies show that nearly one in three Americans feels lonely every single week. And during the holidays, that ache grows louder. For many, this season isn’t filled with cheer, but with silence, distance, and disconnection.
Here’s the truth: we consistently underestimate the power of simple, intentional connection. A call. A text. A knock on the door. A moment of actually seeing someone.
No one should feel like they have to walk into a bar just to feel like they belong.
So here’s a gift idea that costs nothing and matters more than most things money can buy: Reach out. Check in. Start the conversation.
It’s a quiet gift, loudly felt.
Own the day. Own the weekend.
