Five Days. One Year. One Goal. (The Friday Ficks S6 E29)
Some numbers quietly tell the story.
Five days after hip replacement surgery last July, I wasn't thinking about finish lines. I was thinking about pain management, physical therapy, and learning to trust my new hip.
And there was one lurking non-negotiable: the goal of getting back in the running game.
Five days after that surgery, I stood at the finish line cheering on one of my daughters as she finished a 5K road race. The photo we took afterward shows my pride...and my cane.
This past weekend, five days before the one-year anniversary of that surgery, Leia and I ran our first post-surgical 5K together.
No cane. Just two smiles.
The distance itself wasn't the goal. The goal was getting back to the person who could run it.
That didn't happen because of one extraordinary day. It happened because of hundreds of ordinary ones: doing the physical therapy, riding prodigious miles on my bicycle, trusting the process, staying patient when progress felt slow, and believing that today's discipline would become tomorrow's freedom.
Life has a way of rewarding those quiet investments.
Whether you're rebuilding your health, strengthening a relationship, pursuing a dream, or simply trying to become a better version of yourself, meaningful change rarely arrives all at once.
It grows through small choices repeated consistently over time.
This week, I'm grateful.
Grateful for a gifted surgical team, my family, a body that healed and second chances. And grateful that a photograph taken with a cane became the opening chapter of a much better story.
Five days. One year. One goal.
Some victories are measured in kilometers. The best ones are measured in gratitude.
Own the day. Own the weekend.
