The Best Gift I Never Wanted (The Friday Ficks S5 E48)
A new town. A new neighborhood. A new house. A new school. A new set of friends.
And in my 9-year-old mind, all of that had to come with a brand new bike.
So when my parents called me into the garage - voices bubbling with excitement - I was already rehearsing the victory lap. “Something just for me? In the garage?” I tried to act cool but inside, I was “all shook up” like Elvis.
The garage door lifted.
And there it was.
A wicker rocking chair.
Slightly disorienting, to say the least, and not exactly ideal transportation for a kid eager to explore the new neighborhood.
Black Friday is here again, arriving with all the grace of a woolly mammoth performing in The Nutcracker. It’s the season of giving and receiving, wrapped in expectations, assumptions, and plenty of surprises.
Back then, I couldn’t see what my parents were really giving me. They had stretched themselves thin to make a foreign place feel like home. That chair wasn’t a consolation prize - it was an anchor. A symbol of comfort, stability, and love. But I only learned that with time.
Most gifts - whether objects, opportunities, or feedback - don’t reveal their value immediately. And those who judge too quickly often miss what’s beneath the surface.
Gifts aren’t only about the receiver. They’re about the giver - their intent, effort, and heart.
This season, try pausing before reacting. Look past the packaging. Consider the person. You might discover that what feels disorienting in the moment becomes one of the greatest gifts you ever receive.
Like the one I never wanted.
Own the day. Own the weekend.
