Where The Magic Really Lives (The Friday Ficks S5 E16)

A dozen publishers rejected J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel.

A Yale business professor laughed off Fred Smith’s paper - an idea that became FedEx.

Walt Disney? Fired by a newspaper editor for “lacking imagination.”

What’s the through line?

Three wildly successful people. Three very public failures. One shared trait: resilience.

Rowling once said, “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.”

And just this week, we got another reminder.

Rory McIlroy won the 2025 Masters, completing golf’s coveted Grand Slam - winning all four majors. A feat only five other golfers have achieved in the history of the game.

But here's the kicker: each golfer closed the deal within three years. Rory? It took him 11.

Eleven years of near misses, heartbreaks, and headlines. But he kept grinding.

I know the feeling. It took me a full decade - and 11 failed attempts - to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I finally did it. And no, it's not the Grand Slam, but the road was just as long.

As Winston Churchill put it, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Rory had it. So did Rowling, Disney, and Smith. Dare I say it - so did I.

And so do you.

Don't fail by default. Own the stumble, embrace the grind, and summon the courage to continue.

That’s where the magic really lives.

Own the day. Own the weekend.
