Walking The Walk (The Friday Ficks S5 E17)
He came nearly every Sunday.
Always dressed to the nines - suit, tie, and vintage fedora.
Always dignified. Always respectful. Always gracious.
As a young lawyer back in the late ’80s, I volunteered at a soup kitchen in New Britain, Connecticut. Sunday mornings brought a steady stream of guests. Some came once, others often. But I’ve never forgotten him.
When he walked in on the mornings I volunteered he always carried himself like a man heading to meet the King of England. Proud. Regal. Humble.
Despite whatever circumstances brought him to the shelter, I never asked if he was food insecure. Back then, that term didn’t exist in our vocabulary. But we know better now.
Today in Connecticut, nearly 470,000 people - 1 in 8 residents - struggle with hunger. Even more heartbreaking, 1 in 6 Connecticut children don’t know where their next meal will come from. The textbook definition of food insecurity.
That’s where Connecticut Foodshare (https://www.ctfoodshare.org/) steps in. Their mission is to build a stronger, more equitable and dignified response to hunger by uniting community partners, volunteers, and donors. Last year alone, they distributed enough food for over 40 million meals.
Tomorrow is Connecticut Foodshare’s annual Walk Against Hunger - a powerful day of purpose, connection, and impact. (https://donate.ctfoodshare.org/.../walk-against.../e666985)
The need is real. The time is now.
Join us. Show up. Walk the walk.
When I walk tomorrow, I’ll be thinking of the man in the fedora.
He walked the walk.
Connecticut Foodshare walks the walk.
Will you?
Own the day. Own the weekend.
